Fusion Welding

Fusion Welding: Butt and Electrofusion Jointing

At Pipe Testing Services (PTS) we provide a nationwide contracting service for butt and electrofusion jointing of polyethylene (PE) pipe using the most advanced technology.

Our staff are highly experienced and have been working in the pipeline utility sectors for a number of years. In addition to this, as a minimum our site teams are trained to CSCS accreditation, and hold Blue Water and Shea Water cards.

A member of each team is also a certified City and Guilds – Butt and Electrofusion of PE Pipework (Water) and (Gas) engineer.

At Pipe Testing Services we provide expert fusion welding services including:

  • Butt Fusion from 63mmØ up to 900mmØ
  • Electrofusion from 20mmØ up to 800mmØ

Our company provides advanced data analysis to our customers based on the latest technology, which is externally examined by Control Point to add an extra layer of security and quality management for our clients.

Having the capability to use these methods on a vast range of pipe sizes means there’s no project we cannot attend to.

The Difference Between Butt and Electrofusion Jointing

Butt fusion and electrofusion are two techniques employed for connecting polyethylene (PE) pipes. In butt fusion, the ends of the pipes are heated and fused together to create a unified pipe. In contrast, electrofusion utilises pre-made fittings equipped with an electrical heating coil. This coil melts the plastic in both the fitting and the pipe, leading to their seamless fusion.

    Benefits of Butt Fusion Jointing

Butt fusion presents several advantages over alternative methods of connecting polyethylene (PE) pipes. These advantages include:

Butt fusion creates a seamless, end-to-end connection that boasts increased resistance to leaks compared to other connection methods.

Butt fusion is versatile, allowing the joining of pipes and fittings made from different thermoplastic materials, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Butt fusion eliminates the need for extra adhesives or solvents, promoting a cleaner and more environmentally friendly approach to pipe joining.

Butt fusion joints are remarkably durable, demanding minimal maintenance throughout their operational lifespan.

Butt fusion ensures uniform and reproducible results, guaranteeing consistently high-quality joints.

    Benefits of Electrofusion Jointing

Electrofusion jointing stands out as a straightforward and effective method for connecting polyethylene (PE) pipes. Key advantages of electrofusion jointing include:

Electrofusion jointing creates robust and durable joints, showcasing resistance to leaks and various types of damage.

This method ensures uniform and reproducible results, maintaining a consistently high level of joint quality.

Electrofusion jointing doesn’t necessitate extra adhesives or solvents, contributing to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly approach to pipe joining.

Electrofusion joints exhibit exceptional durability, requiring minimal maintenance throughout their operational lifespan.

Electrofusion jointing proves versatile, allowing the connection of pipes and fittings composed of diverse thermoplastic materials, including polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Electrofusion jointing facilitates straightforward repair and modification of pipelines without the need to remove pipes.
